NBA Jam was the first arcade game hit to take the sports genre into an extremely unrealistic, over-the-top gameplay. The game featured real NBA players playing 2-on-2 in full court. Everything was exaggerrated. There were no fouls or violations, except for goaltending.
The most memorable part of NBA Jam was when a player was "on fire". If one of your players made three consecutive shots, he would be "on fire" until the other team scored. When on fire, you pretty could not miss from anywhere on the floor.
The game was an instant hit. As a matter of fact, in its original arcade run, it earned over $1 billion in profits.
