Donkey Kong was a hugely important game for countless reasons. It was the first game that really introduced Nintendo to the United States market. It was the first game in which the most iconic figure in video games, Mario, appeared in. He was originally called jump man. The game influenced the entire platform genre, (also known as the run and jump genre). It led to countless games in which the hero had to save the "damsel in distress". It was also the first video game designed by the legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto.
The story of Donkey Kong is simple. Donkey Kong escapes and captures Mario's girlfriend, Pauline. Mario has to go through ever increasing challenging levels in order to save her. The game also used tiny cut scenes in order to narrate the plot. Something all of us are used to now, but at the time it was revolutionary.
The game had four different kinds of stages. The first one is the stage in which Mario has to climb a 7-story construction site , with the help of ladders. Along the way he must jump over the barrels that Donkey Kong has tossed at him. In the second stage, Mario must climb up a 5-story construction site in which he must conveyer belts as his main form of transportation. In the third stage, Mario must use the elevators and in the meantime avoid the bouncing objects in order to reach the top. In the 4th stage Mario must climb the ladders and avoid the fireballs in order to remove 8 blocks which support Donkey Kong. It's at the end of this level, in which Mario is reunited with Pauline.
