Centipede Arcade Game and Parts
In Centipede your goal is very simple. Shoot down every piece of the centipede that is coming after you. The centipede comes down the screen going from left to right then right to left. There are other insects after you as well. There are also mushrooms all over the screen which get in the way of your lasers as you try to shoot the centipede.
When the centipede reaches the bottom of the screen he turns right around and goes back up the screen. As you shoot the pieces of the centipede, the next piece of the centipede becomes a much faster moving piece. The ideal situation would be to shoot pieces of the centipede consecutively so they don't break and become faster.
It was one of the first arcade games to use the trackball as a control as opposed to a joystick. It was very unique way to play games. It force video game players to have a steadier hand when playing. The trackball was so sensitive that moving your shooter took some time to get used to.
Centipede is also considered to be one of the first arcade games to have a real strong following with women. It also might have to do with the fact that it was one of the first arcade games created by a woman, Dona Bailey.
